Path of the Tired Stones

This site was dedicated to the carving and extraction of the stones used to construct Ollantaytambo and many surrounding buildings. Located nine kilometers from the Inca town of Ollantaytambo, it comprises three groups of quarries: Molle Pucro, Sirkusirkuyoc (the largest of the three), which shows evidence of having been in full operation when the Spanish entered the area, and Kantirayoq or Cacchicata, where a different type of mineral and precious stone extraction was practiced. Visitors can observe the immense effort involved in transporting the gigantic stones to build the structures of Ollantaytambo. The so-called “Tired Stones,” which were left behind along the route to Ollantaytambo and in some parts of the town, can also be found here.
